Winter Pruning for Summer Abundance

Winter Pruning for Summer Abundance

Happy New Year Farm Friends!

We have lots of exciting plans for 2025. We will offer a lot more you pick opportunities for our local community, including you pick daffodils, roses, plums, apples, pears and whatever else fruits well. We also plan to offer more shipped fruit boxes for our friends around the country.

I always welcome the turn of the year for new ideas and new beginnings as well as the comforting cycle of winter farm tasks. This is the time of year the farm turns inward, and we focus on setting up our trees and perennial plants for a healthy and abundant season to come. Proper pruning is the heart of our winter work. From December - February we will prune hundreds of fruit trees and roses. We want to share our knowledge, tips and tricks with you.

Winter Fruit Tree Pruning Workshops

To kick the year off right, we are hosting two winter fruit tree pruning workshops. Tree pruning can seem daunting and scary at first. Cutting whole limbs and branches from trees can feel like hurting the trees. But for ideal tree health and generous fruit production, pruning is invaluable.Β

In our workshops, we will cover pruning new, young and mature trees, discuss appropriate tools and different pruning styles. Walking through the orchard and with hands on demonstrations, we will look at how pruning decisions effect growth and productivity in walnuts, peaches, nectarines, plums, figs, apples, pears and persimmons. We will also discuss what not to prune in the winter, watering and fertilization.
