The Hauer Pippin apple is one of last apples to leave the orchard, a trait that earned it the nickname “Christmas Apple” in its heyday a hundred years ago. Hauer Pippin apple tree is thought to be a hybrid of a famous English apple, the Cox Orange Pippin and a Yellow Bellflower since both varieties were growing nearby where the original seedling was discovered in Santa Cruz in 1890's. In most climates Hauer Pippin apples are green with a dark red blush with prominent white spots. Great multi-purpose apple, best as a dessert apple, keeps flavor and shape when cooked also juicy with sharpness for well balanced cider.
