Kieffer Pears

Kieffer pears are an old American variety, traditionally grown as hedge rows and border markers. They are an unusually prolific variety, each tree producing hundreds of pounds of fruit annually, and they can live for hundreds of years. Botanically, they are classified as a cross between the European bartlett pear, Pyrus communis, and the Asian sand pear, Pyrus pyrifolia.

Kieffer pears have a light, juicy and mellow flavor when eaten fresh. They will mellow at room temperature, changing over a few weeks from crunchy to soft fleshed. Kieffer pears also shine when cooked or canned, for they retain their shape under heat.
