Kieffer pears are an old American variety, traditionally grown as hedge rows and border markers. They are an unusually prolific variety, each tree producing hundreds of pounds of fruit annually, and they can live for hundreds of years. Botanically, they are classified as a cross between the European bartlett pear and the Asian sand pear.
